Overview

The Royal Highland Festival, held annually in Bhutan's remote highland region (Laya) each October, is a vibrant celebration of the rich traditions and cultural heritage of the country’s highland communities, particularly its nomadic tribes. Inaugurated in 2011, the festival aims to preserve and promote the unique lifestyle of these highland people. The event features traditional dances, music performances, and local crafts, and offers visitors the chance to experience long-standing ceremonies and rituals. Attendees can also enjoy local foods and witness the vibrant dress and customs of the highland communities, all set against the stunning backdrop of Bhutan’s highlands.

Alongside the festival, you can explore Bhutan’s cultural landmarks, including the world’s largest seated Buddha in Thimphu, the magnificent Punakha Dzong, the Fertility Temple, and the iconic Tiger’s Nest Monastery in Paro.

Tentative Itinerary / Activities
Day 1 : Thimphu to Paro

Distance: 49 kms (1:30hrs drive)

Elevation: 2200 mts / 2334 mts

  • Upon arrival at Paro International Airport, you will be greeted by stunning views of the Himalayas.
  • At the exit point, you will be received by our seasoned guide with our traditional scarf and drive to your designated hotel in Thimphu, the capital city of Bhutan, check in, and have refreshments or breakfast.
  • Start your day with a visit to Kuensel Phodrang - the magnificent bronze statue of Buddha Dordenma. This grand statue provides breathtaking panoramic views of the city and stands as a powerful symbol of peace and prosperity.
  • Next, venture to the Royal Takin Reserve to encounter Bhutan's rich wildlife, including the majestic Takin, the country's national animal. Witness these fascinating creatures in their natural habitat and marvel at their uniqueness.
  • Explore Tashi Chhodzong, a grand fortress-monastery that houses the throne room of His Majesty the King of Bhutan and serves as the heart of Bhutanese governance and spirituality.
  • After a day of exploration, return to your hotel for a delicious dinner and well-deserved relaxation, reflecting on the wonders of your Bhutanese adventure.
Day 2 : Thimphu to Punakha

Distance: 72 kms (2:30 hrs)

Elevation: 2334 mts / 1242 mts

  • Enjoy a hearty breakfast at your hotel before embarking on your journey to Punakha, an ancient capital of Bhutan.
  • Stop at Dochula Pass (3100 mts), renowned for its breathtaking panoramic views and the 108 Druk Wangyel Stupas.
  • Enjoy a delicious lunch at the farmhouse.
  • Upon reaching Lobesa, visit Chimi Lhakhang, also known as the temple of fertility.
  • Visit Punakha Dzong, often described as the country's most beautiful fortress. Explore the intricacies of Bhutanese architecture and learn about the historical and cultural significance of this majestic structure.
  • Wrap up the day by checking into your hotel, enjoying a delicious dinner, and indulging in some well-deserved relaxation.
Day 3 : Punakha - Gasa - Laya

Distance: 70 kms (5 hrs drive)

Walking Hours: 2 hrs from the Road Point Tashimaka to Laya

Elevation: 1200 mts / 3800 mts

  • We will have an early breakfast and drive to the end of the road, where the hike begins. Along the way, we will experience the rural life of Punakha Valley.
  • After a two-hour drive, we will reach Gasa, where we can admire the majestic Gasa Dzong (fortress) and explore the charming small town of Gasa.
  • We will continue driving for another three hours until we reach Tashimakha, where the hike starts. At Tashimakha, our trekking team will be waiting with a hot lunch, and we will start packing our luggage to be loaded onto horses.
  • After lunch, we will begin our hike to Laya Valley. The two-hour trek starts with a flat walk and gradually transitions into a gentle climb as we approach Laya Valley.
  • Upon arrival in Laya, we will be welcomed by the trekking team with refreshments and settle into our beautiful, pitched tents for the night.
Day 4 : Laya Festival

Elevation: 3800 mts

  • We will wake up early to find ourselves surrounded by the mesmerizing snow-capped Himalayan mountains. After breakfast, we will head to the festival grounds.
  • The festival begins with the arrival of the chief guest in a grand traditional procession.
  • We will witness the cultural programs of the Highlanders, including a grand parade featuring domestic animals from the Highlands such as yaks, Tibetan Mastiffs, horses, sheep, and mules.
  • We can sample traditional highland food, explore local stalls, and enjoy performances by local and visiting artists, including singing and dancing.
  • After the festival, we will return to our campsite. Following dinner, we will enjoy a bonfire concert organized by the festival committee.
Day 5 : Laya to Punakha

Distance: 50 kms (3hrs drive)

Walking Hours: 1 hr from Laya to Road Point Tashimaka

Elevation: 3800 mts / 1200 mts

  • We will have breakfast and then get ready to travel to Punakha. After breakfast, we will walk for an hour to the road point, say goodbye to the trekking team, and begin our journey to Punakha.
  • Upon reaching Gasa, we will have lunch at a farmhouse before continuing our journey to Punakha.
  • On the way, we can see the beautiful Punakha Valley.
  • After arriving in Punakha, we will check into the hotel, relax, and enjoy a sumptuous dinner.
Day 6 : Punakha to Paro

Distance: 115 kms (3.5 hrs drive)

Elevation: 1200 mts / 2200 mts

  • After breakfast, we will drive towards Thimphu, enjoying the beautiful scenic drive and making stops along the way for photography breaks.
  • We will have lunch in Thimphu, then explore the handicraft market and visit the Memorial Chorten dedicated to His Majesty the Third King of Bhutan.
  • We will then drive to Paro, check into the hotel, and have a good rest followed by a delicious dinner.
Day 7 : Hike to Tiger's Nest

Elevation: 3120 mts

Walking Hours: 5–6 hrs (back & forth, 8 km)

  • Enjoy breakfast at your hotel to fuel up for the day's adventure.
  • Head northwest out of Paro for a memorable hike to the iconic Paro Taktsang, also known as the ‘Tiger’s Nest Monastery’. This legendary monastery clings to a sheer cliff face, offering breathtaking views of the Paro Valley below.
  • The hike takes about 5 to 6 hours round trip, depending on your pace and rest stops along the way. Be prepared for a challenging yet rewarding trek through lush forests and steep terrain.
  • Have a delicious lunch at the Tiger’s Nest cafeteria with the breathtaking Tiger’s Nest view in the background.
  • After completing the hike, return to your hotel for a well-deserved rest.
  • You can explore the local markets and shops in Paro to shop for souvenirs, such as traditional Bhutanese crafts, textiles, and other unique items.
  • Enjoy a delicious dinner, return to your room, rest, and relax, reflecting on the incredible experience of hiking to Tiger’s Nest.
Day 8 : Departure
  • Enjoy your last breakfast in Bhutan at your hotel, savoring the flavors and reflecting on your journey.
  • After breakfast, your guide will accompany you on the drive to Paro International Airport for your departure.
